The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Clinical Professor and chair in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology as per 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a combined position at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital and is a permanent full-time position.

About the Department of Clinical Medicine

As a clinical professor and chair at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the master’s degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 670 academic employees, 500 PhD students and 160 technical/administrative employees who are cooperating across disciplines. About the Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery employs 72 medical doctors of whom 55 are specialists in Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology and cover all subspecialties. The staff includes 4 clinical professors and professors, and 9 associate professors. Each year 1- 2 PhD students and 3-4 research year students graduate from the department. We publish approximately 100 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals annually. The research activity covers research within all aspects of clinical orthopaedics.
We engage in clinical as well as para-clinical collaborations and cover basic research methodologies, animal models, health service and organizational research contributions. We have a well-established training program for young scientists.  The research is considered the core element in maintenance and development of the department’s clinical areas.

Your job responsibilities

As Clinical Professor and chair in the field of Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, you will have joint responsibility for the maintenance and development of the department's research and teaching environment, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall research strategy. You are expected to contribute – both independently and in collaboration with others – to the development of the department by leading research of international quality and contributing to ensuring a high academic and didactic standard in the teaching. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you will contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the university’s profile both nationally and internationally.

In this position you will be an equal part of the department management, together with the chief physician and chief nurse, at Department of Orthopaedics at Aarhus University Hospital. The team members have equal and shared responsibilities and decision influence for all aspects of leading the department through their individual professional competences. Consequently, the successful candidate for this, must have an interest in management and be able to document experience within leadership.

As chair, you have the overall responsibility for the theoretical and practical education in Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, in Central Denmark Region Midtjylland. It is expected that you participate and lead all aspects of providing a state-of-the-art Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology pre-graduate education such as lectures, developing learning goals, organise examination and clinical training. Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Doing research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • Contributing to the external research funding.
  • Doing assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
  • Participation in research-based collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
You must be capable of:
  • Influencing regional and governmental regulatory authorities.
  • Developing techniques, technology, and infrastructure in a medical field with rapidly increasing caseload.
  • Further developing the various research activities at the department. The success of the department should be the driving force rather than the success of individuals.
  • Providing leadership for teaching of medical students.
  • Being the driving force of the development of research within Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology in The Central Denmark Region.
  • Participating in and equally contribute to the department leader team.
  • Securing development of the speciality through recruitment and talent management.
You will report to the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine Jørgen Frøkiær.

Appointment as Clinical Professor and chair requires simultaneous employment as chief consultant at Aarhus University Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Your competences

You have established yourself as a prominent clinical researcher within Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, and you possess solid research and teaching qualifications at an international level. You have shown the ability to initiate and develop ways of improving and expanding the research of the speciality, both at the other hospitals in Region Midtjylland as well as the highly specialized functions at Aarhus University Hospital. You have solid experience as main supervisor for PhD students and has shown strong abilities towards career development for colleagues on all academic levels from junior- to senior-level. You have broad regional, national and international cooperative partnerships and great experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders. You have also documented ability to attract external funding.

You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. This of course in close collaboration with the other professors and associated professors at the department. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching. Spoken language is Danish.

Because of your central position in leadership of all aspects of the department life you are expected to possess or acquire a relevant level of administration and collaboration skills.
